Modernising the Façade with Light-Directing Glass Blocks
The Police Credit Union project comprised the refurbishment of an existing commercial building
in Adelaide. Light Directing Glass Blocks had previously been incorporated at the rear of the
building within a fire -rated mortar assembly. The new intervention was conceived to complement
this earlier installation while introducing a more contemporary jointing system. Two substantial
glass block panels were incorporated into the front elevation, establishing a defined architectural
presence at the street interface. Their crisp geometry and silver – toned finish introduce a
contemporary layer to the façade composition, set in deliberate contrast against the darker
material palette of the existing building.
Combining Contemporary Design with Precise Glass Block Installation
Delivered in collaboration with IA Projects and under the direction of Koush Design, Glass Block
Solutions employed linear Light Directing Blocks set within a 3mm translucent silicone joint. This
detailing strategy introduced a finer, more resolved surface articulation, allowing the new work
to sit in dialogue with the original glass block construction while presenting a more precise and
contemporary finish.
Enhancing Natural Light and Privacy with Light Directing Glass Blocks
The Light Directing Block is defined by its capacity to modulate and redistribute natural light.
Sunlight entering the external face is refracted by prismatic geometry within the glass, directing
the light horizontally through the unit. At the internal face, the light is redirected upward toward
the ceiling plane, where it is diffused and reflected deeper into the interior. The system enhances
daylight penetration and supports the illumination of spaces located well beyond the building
perimeter. In addition to shaping and redistributing daylight, the Light Directing Glass Block
provides a high degree of privacy. The prismatic geometry within the glass obscures direct views
through the block, allowing natural light to enter while limiting visual permeability. This achieves
a balance between openness and enclosure, preserving the presence of daylight within the
interior without compromising privacy.
Bringing Natural Light and Contemporary Design Together
The Police Credit Union refurbishment in Adelaide shows how Light Directing Glass Blocks can improve both the appearance and function of a commercial building. The new glass block panels complement the existing structure while adding a modern finish to the façade.
By directing daylight further into the interior and limiting direct views, these glass blocks offer a practical way to balance natural light and privacy. The project also highlights the value of careful planning, product selection and installation in achieving a consistent architectural finish.
